What are Domain Blocking Services?

The principle of domain blocking is simple. A string, label or keyword containing a brand name or trademarked term in any form is blocked from future registration as a valid domain name and therefore
cannot be used for fraudulent or abusive purposes.
Depending on the blocking service chosen, the number of TLDs that will be blocked for registration will be determined. Some of the blocking service providers today also offer advanced services that allow blocking of
variants of their strings, including common typos and mixed script or homoglyph registrations.
Generally, an existing registration with the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) is required to use the blocking services. InterNetX offers a matching Trademark Clearinghouse Agent Service for trademark owners if needed.
As with domains, there are the tasks CREATE, TRANSFER, UPDATE and DELETE for the Domain Blocking Services.

What Domain Blocking Service providers are there and what services do they offer?

The blocking services offered by a number of registries provide a comprehensive alternative to perpetual Sunrise registrations.
Trademark owners can use their TMCH record to block domain registrations by third parties under their trademarked terms.

When does the Blocking Service not work?

  • When a domain is already registered
  • When another trademark owner with the exact same name applies for the domain (override)
  • When it is a premium domain (only for Donuts)
  • When a domain is upgraded from Standard to Premium by the registry

What is an override?

The registration of blocked domain names is still possible for the owner of the domain block, depending on the blocking service provider.
Only a trademark owner with an identical trademark in the Trademark Clearinghouse can also override a block by this so-called override.
The following domain blocking services allow an override for trademark owners:

  • DPML blocking service (Identity Digital fka Donuts)
  • DPML plus blocking service (Identity Digital fka Donuts)
  • Uni EPS blocking service (UNR)
  • Uni EPS plus blocking service (UNR)
  • ShortBlock business service (Shortdot)
  • ShortBlock homonym service (Shortdot)
  • ShortBlock wildcard service (Shortdot)
